Galleries, Ancient & Not so Ancient

This the first of, hopefully, many, unless we run out of space. If anyone has experience of online photo galleries, and thinks there would be an appropriate one to use, please get in touch gregorystoke@aol.com Thanks, Dave

Pete & Lin Smart's Farewell click HERE. Their last evening at the Royal Oak, Tuesday 24th May 1988. Will we see its like again? Were you there? If you remember it, you were either not there or you left before dawn.

The Final Raft Race click HERE  Who remembers the raft races, organised by Tess, landlady of the White Hart. These pictures are from the last event in 1988 or 1999. The race was from New Bridge to Turkey, and that year the River Tone was at about its lowest level ever. Some competitors had to get off and push! Apart from the cases of Weil's Disease, there were not too many disasters, but all the finishers had to climb through the mud to get up the bank at Turkey.

VE Day 1995 click HERE Following the Centenary Fair the previous year, the village got together again in the Square, with a tea party, Maypole dancing, St George & the Dragon, and community singing. This was followed by a wartime style dance in the Royal Oak function room (any photos anyone?)

Pram Race 1977 click HERE  The Queen's silver Jubilee saw a fun race through the village, with some very amusing costumes. Later pram races and fun runs eventually led to the start of the, now world famous, Stoke Stampede. These are just a few photos.

Old Stoke Photos click HERE The late David House, of Dykes Farm, was given a set of 'lantern slides' taken in the 1930s. The several hundred photos cover a large area of Somerset and into Devon, and David gave them to the Somerset Archives. Here are some of the local ones. Clicking on one of the individual photos will take you to a different arrangement, which has accompanying text.
